Mabinay, Negros Oriental-Cave Capital of the Philippines

Oct 10th, 2008 | By b2ng | Category: News and Headlines

With more than 400 caves that can be found in the town of Mabinay, the municipality may now be considered as the cave capital of the Philippines because of its explored and unexplored hidden treasure, on the same town can also be found the second longest cave in the country, the Odlongan cave.

According to Vice-mayor Ernesto Uy the local government of Mabinay is now planning to increase the fees charged to the visitors for the purpose that they will develop and maintained the beauty of the caves. Resolutions were approved for continuous exploration and development of these caves, with more funding requirement for the acquisition of equipment, among others, he said.

The town is now recorded at least 50 out of 400 caves that have been developed and explored wherein the local government of Mabinay organized different activities such as extreme sports, kayaking and rappelling for the local and foreign tourist.  Another discovery from the beauty of nature in Mabinay is the Bugsok falls; a 70 meter high falls where a hot spring is located. The municipality is now requesting a fund from Negros Oriental Governor Emilio Matias II for the development and beautification of the said falls.

NORSUnians’ Existence in the Town of Mabinay
    By: Lilibeth E. Cadorna

NORSU-Mabinay Campus hosted the opening of “LIngganay sa Mabinay” held at Poblacion, Mabinay Lingganay stage last December 20, 2009. The performers were selected students with the special participation of its faculty members from different programs offered, to wit: BSCrim, AB-English, BSBA, BSOSM, BSCS and BSIT. They all presented their own Christmas symbols which were very eye catching.

The BSBA were the first to present and I was one of them. I was so nervous at first but later on I was able to feel fine.

The entire show lasted for a couple of hours. All the participants of course that includes me went home with great pride! We were all thankful for that wonderful moment to showcase our talents to our fellow Mabinayanons.

    Syempre sa NORSU-Mabinay!
    By. Rosella P. Rodriguez

If someone asks you, “Asa ka ga-eskwela?” can you proudy say “Syempre sa NORSU- Mabinay!”? Knowing all the universities and colleges here in Negros Oriental with wonderful façade, high-rise buildings, fully-equipped classroom facilities, and gaining prestigious records, it may be quite hard for a student of a newly-established campus to boast of his school. Our school, Negros Oriental State University- Mabinay Campus, a one year and two months old school is now starting to gain compliments…and criticisms. You can hear some say “NORSU-Namangka” rather than “NORSU-Mabinay” or “University? Naa man na tunga sa katubhan!” or “Dili man na school, baul man na!” it hurts, right? It really hurts. But turning our backs from all those criticisms is not the best thing to do. We, NORSU-M students, should learn how to smile at criticisms. We should always remember that learning does not depend solely on the beauty of the school. It’s on us students, it’s on us how we absorb all the daily lessons-lessons in school and in life. Everything in this world starts with nothing. What was NORSU Main Campus before? It was even tagged as “bahong taya”. We must stay strong and determined despite all the criticisms that people throw on us. Being a true-blue Nursonian takes more than just singing and memorizing the NORSU Hymn, Mission, Vision, Corporate Values and Goals. What matters and counts most is how we apply every word of it in our lives and learn how to become better persons and better citizens of this country. One thing that we should be proud of is that we chose to go to school instead of staying at home, doing nothing and be called simply as “tambays”. We must be determined to move onward. What’s important now is that we have to strive hard and do our best so that we can prove to these people that studying in a campus that is “naa sa tunga sa katubhan” is not an obstacle to continue our journey to success. If someone will ask “ Asa ka ga-eskwela?” we can say with our heads up, “Siyempre sa NORSU- Mabinay!”

NORSU- M: The Seed of Hope
    By. Rosella P. Rodriguez

Just like how a tiny seed sprouts, NORSU-M is now starting to develop its roots, stem, leaves, and hopefully, its fruits.

Through the initiative and effort of the University President, Hon. Henry A. Sojor, Ph.D., Campus Administrator, Prof. Cesar P. Estrope, Ed.D. Officials from the university system and LGU, Negros Oriental State University – Mabinay Campus was established. It was a dream-come-true for all the Mabinayons; to have a university that caters quality education despite poverty. It was on June 16, 2009 when the Seed of Hope was planted, just exactly on the same date (June 16, 1997) when the Mabinay Institute of Technology (MIT), a collegiate institution was also established. Republic Act 9299 of Philippines Bicameral Congress has grown MIT to NORSU-M. So, the MIT buildings are now used as classrooms for the students.

Located at North Poblacion, Mabinay, Negros Oriental, NORSU- M stands in the midst of a 6.5 hectare lot, blessed with sugarcane and corn plantations.

NORSU- M started with 342 students last June 2009. But after a semester it dropped to 232 due to financial constraints.

But giving up is not the answer to all these obstacles. NORSU-M is now on its second year of operation. With one building funded by the Basta NegOr and two MIT buildings, the campus is now serving 304 students for this semester, AY:2010-2011.

NORSU –M has two departments : the Arts and Sciences and the Business and Technology. The Arts and Sciences has BS Criminology, AB General Curriculum and Associate in Criminology while the Business and Technology has BS in Industrial Technology, BS Office Systems Management, BS Computer Science, BS Hospitality Management, Associate in Industrial Technology, Associate in Office Systems Management, Associate in Computer Science and Associate in Hospitality Management.

NORSU- M, being a year and two months old satellite campus, provides the hope for all the students coming from the different barangays of the town. The success of its student is the fruit that someday everybody will reap. We owe this to NORSU-M, our Pride, our Hope, and our Future.

    NORSU –M for Progress
    By: Franklin A. Cadiz

After few weeks of striving in a newly opened university – NORSU – M, “ Araw ng Wika” was the first activity celebrated by the Norsunians last August 2009 with the theme : “Wikang Pilipino Mula Baler Hanggang Buong Mundo.”
It was highlighted with various competitions such as: hut making, larong Pinoy, search for Lakan and Lakambini 2009, etc.
I was the Lakan representative of the BSBA . So I started the day with panic, still looking for a costume to wear. While the rest of the students were already in school, busied themselves preparing for the competition.
Few moments later, the judging of the hut began. Each hut has its own design, landscape, and food displays, so the judges really had a hard time to choose which one is the best. Finally, it was the hut that looked like a cave made by the BSOSM students that won.
“Larong Pinoy was the most exciting part of the celebration. I can still recall how every one of us tried hard to win the games, especially the Criminology students. Some of us got wounded but despite of it we felt so happy, even if we lost. The most important is that we enjoyed it and we learned good values after the games.
Finally, the pre-pageant for the search of Lakan and Lakambini 2009 came. I found it very exciting but I got so conscious and uncomfortable because of the costume I was wearing. But when I regained my composure, everything went well.
I was so glad that me and my partner were able to perform well our on the spot talent. I felt frustrated and disappointed because we were not able to receive minor awards. But I was able to convince myself that I should never lose hope since we still have our final pageant.
Travelling the highway of Paniabonan we found ourselves embracing the morning air while riding our motorcycles. We were heading to Highland Resort which was the venue of our first Mabinay-Anihan Convocation and Acquaintance Party with the theme “Invest and Harvest”, and the coronation for Lakan and Lakambini. Highland Resort is known all- over the town of Mabinay because of its man-made lakes and its natural beauty of nature.
The program started with an Inter-Faith and was followed by the arrival of honors. Seeing the University President and the rest of the visitors from the NORSU system really made me shy to talk. The awkward instances, however, did not last long. The first part of the celebration was done. So we had to go back to our respective homes to take our lunch while the visitors stayed in the resort.
The coronation for the Lakan and Lakambini started at 8:00 P.M. I felt so uncomfortable because of my fever which made me shiver the whole night.
Some of the students showed their skill in modeling together with Mr. NORSU-Bais 2009, Mr. Philip Am Guay, who reigned as Mr. NORSU 2009.
At the end of the pageant, I was judged as the Lakan ng Visayas (2nd runner-up). While my partner, Maridel P. Ortega, won as the Lakambini 2009 and Timmy Cargazon from the BSOSM as the Lakan 2009.
They represented our campus during the Mr. and Miss NORSU 2010 competition. Maridel was able to bag the Miss Congeniality award in the Mister & Miss NORSU System pageant.
The disco culminated the event, though I was not able to join my friends because of my condition, resting on a sofa in one of the cottages made me feel better.
We went home early in the morning with great satisfaction in our hearts. We did not only celebrate our first Mabinay Anihan Convocation and Acquaintance party but we were able to also help NORSU- M in our own humble ways.
