Municipality of Candoni
History
The name Candoni came from the native phrase Kan Dune, which mean belongiong to Dune, a legendary beautiful lovely lady named Dionesia who killed himself after being forced to marry the person she did not love. Candoni was a former barrio of the Municpality of Cauayan which started as a settlement in the year 1935. Candoni was under the rule of Santiago Diego who founded the Tabla Valley Settlement and fathered the move to make the barrio Candoni as the center of the economic activities for interior communities in the south.
In 1958 by the virtue of the Executive Order No. 314 under the presidency of President Carlos P. Garcia Candoni was declared as municipality of Negros Occidental. It was inaugurated as a town on August 12, 1961 and Benjamin Nava as the first appointed municipal mayor to govern the municipality.Right now the municipality considered as a 4th class municipality in the province of Negros Occidental and it has an estimated total population of 19,987 in 3,3710 households.
