Kabankalan City Sinulog Festival Winners Named

The City of Kabankalan in Negros Occidental has successfully celebrated their 33rd Sinulog Festival 2009. One of the main attractions of this colorful event was the Tribal competition that participated by different tribes which represents every barangay of the city.

The Tribu Ompong of Barangay Tabugon was declared the winner, while the Tribu Tres of Barangay 3 post at the second place and third place was awarded to Tribu Lasang of Barangay Magballo.

Aside from winning as the first place, Tribu Ompong also bagged special awards such as Best in Street Dancing Competition, Best in Costume and Best in Choreography.

The winners of the said competition received a trophy and cash prizes. The champion, second and third placers received P50,000, P300,000 and P200,000 in cash plus P300,000, P200,000 and P100,000 worth of projects, respectively.

For the Drum and Sound contest, first place winner was Tribu 9 of Brgy. 9, second place went to Tribu Camansi of Brgy. Camansi, and third place was bagged by Brgy. 3.

BacoLaodiat Festival : Bacolod City

Bacolod City in Negros Occidental is not only known for its colorful and elegant Masskara Festival celebration, but today a must see and unique event has been born to add and will give more excitement and celebration to the city of smile. BacoLaodiat is derived from the words Bacolod and “Lao Diat”, which is Fookien for celebration. It was started way back 2004. Capitol Shopping Center in Bacolod City, known as the Chinatown of Bacolod City because of the great number of Chinese businessmen and residents in the area, was chosen the center of celebration for this upcoming event.

The BacoLaodiat Festival will kick-off this January 23, and it will run until January 26, 2009. The 4-days celebration of this event will make visitors and local people discover and fall in love with the unique side of Bacolod City by featuring the best of the Chinese and Filipino cultures brought and enhance together in one Big Chinese New Year Celebration.

Featured events that can be witnessed are the Chopsticks Alley along the streets of Narra and Lopez Jaena starting on the 23rd. This food walk and night market will be lined up with colorful rolling carts of delicious Chinese food, souvenirs and art and crafts. Street performers wearing attractive and glittery Chinese costumes will surely entertain the crowd and add to the festive ambiance of the place.

Also opening on the 23rd at the festival site is the Lantern Park, featuring a Symphony of Lights and Sparks. This will include a nightly display of illuminated colorful giant lanterns by local artists and synchronized multi-fireworks show scored with music and drumbeats. On the 24th, 10 dance groups will battle it out in the Lantern Street-dancing Competition on the street of Bacolod City, the competition will kick-off at 6:30pm from Bacolod Public Plaza to the festival site. A total of P160,000 is awaiting for the contestant to be declared winner.

Go crazy over the animated and colorful Dazzling Parade scheduled on the 25th at 6pm. A definite must-see, the parade will showcase beautifully illuminated floats, lanterns, lions and dragons alongside Chinese drumbeaters, acrobats or Wu Shu and Kaddang dancers and a major float carrying a long-lighted dragon with lions. The parade route is from the SM Bacolod South Carpark to the festival site.

Experience the merging of two cultures in the Convergence: A Tsinoy Show with its line-up of Chinese and Filipino songs and dances, right after the Dazzling Parade.

Stay for the most exciting part of welcoming the Year of the Ox’the New Year countdown. It’s all happening just before the spectacular colorful fireworks display around the main site.

This 4th BacoLaodiat Festival is organized and arranged by the BacoLaodiat Inc. in cooperation with the City of Bacolod, Province of Negros Occidental, Department of Tourism, Negros Tsinoy Inc., Chowking, SM Bacolod, Pagcor and Triangle Island Plaza. This is also supported by Senator Mar Roxas.

Fiesta Cultural Nights Held in Bacolod City

Different dance troupe joined and performed at the San Sebastian Fiesta Cultural Nights last evening, January 16, 2009. The Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Kanlaon Theater Guild and Kagayon Dance Troupe made good performances at the cultural night that was held at the Social Hall, third floor, Diocesan Center, behind the Bishop’s House in Bacolod City.

The Kanlaon group presented a 20-minute comic play entitled “Pangapkap” a restaging of the 2003 Summer Negros Summer Workshops Work-in-Progress Course which veteran Philippine director Peque Gallaga conceived, while the Kagayon Dance Troupe performed a contemporary and pop dances.

Expected to join also on this fiesta cultural nights are the La Consolacion College, set to perform today while Bacolod City College and University of St. La Salle Chorale will schedule to show their talents on Sunday, January 18, 2009.

Drumbeat Competition to be Stage on the (Masskara Festival) Highlights

The SM City Bacolod will sponsor a drumbeat competition entitled”Sigaboom 2008 Tribal Drumbeating Competition: The World Beat Challenge”. It is one of the attractions in the highlights of Masskara Festival on October 19, 2008. It would be the first time to stage a competition like this during the Masskara Festival. This contest is open to all groups, each participant should be compose of eight members and must not exceed of 16 persons, and it should be composed of leader, drumbeaters, percussionists and dancers.

The organizers prepared different prizes for those who will hailed as winners, P 12, 500 in cash and P12, 500 of SM gift certificates are waiting for the champion while second runner-up will take P6, 000 in cash and P6, 500 in SM gift certificates with trophy; the third runner-up will get P3, 500 in cash and P3, 500 in gift certificates with trophy. A total of P18, 000 in gift certificates will be given to non-winners.

All Set for Masskara Festival Celebration in Bacolod City

It’s all system go now for the Masskara Festival Celebration according to the festival organizers, with the theme “Bacolod City, Around the World”. The local government of Bacolod set to make a history as president of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo granted their invitation to be the guest honor for the grand opening slated on October 1, 2008 at the Bacolod City public Plaza.

The Masskara Festival schedule of activities has been released by the organizers for the foreign and local tourists in order for them to have enough idea what activities they want to join or witness. Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia thanks all the civic and local organizers for their support to establish a good and memorable celebration. He is also inviting everyone from all over the Philippines to visit and witness how Bacolodnons celebrates their colorful and joyous festival of masks.

The Masskara Festival was recognized by the Department of Tourism as one of the tourist’s attraction in the Philippines especially in Bacolod City. For the record, the Masskara Festival dancer s who won the previous street dancing competition also represented the country in different countries to showcase the colorful fiesta that can be found in the Philippines.

Masskara Festival started and founded in 1980 when the province of Negros was suffering a period of crisis on its sugar production. It was also the time of mourning when the inter-island vessel Don Juan collided with the tanker of Tacloban City. The passenger ship carrying many Negrense, including those from the prominent families and personalities from Bacolod City, an estimated 700 lives lost on the tragic accident that left a scar on the heart of Bacolodnons.

Being dubbed as the “City of Smiles” by many, the city government, local artists and civic organizations decided to create a festival of smiles to pull the people from depressing atmosphere of their lives. The birth of Masskara Festival was then about to witness.

The term “Masskara” is derived from two words: Mass which means crowd, and Cara which means face, which also doubles as a term for mask. The festival’s symbol, a smiling mask, symbolizes a happy spirit despite sadness. It is celebrated from the month of October specifically from October 1-19, which is also marked as the city charter anniversary as their festival highlights. Different activities like street dancing, beauty pageant, food festivals, street concerts and live bands, parades of float, trade fairs, merry making and lot of fun gigs can be found and witnessed in the city.

Many foreign and local tourists arrived in the city during the Masskara Festival season that’s why the Bacolod City hotels usually recorded a much greater number of clients compare to regular business days and the local government considered Masskara Festival as the major boost of Tourism in Bacolod City.
